Becoming vulnerable made me weak, and I never saw it coming.

EXCERPT & TEASER

Watching movers pack away his things and throw them into the truck is so
impersonal. Tossing the boxes into a truck with no thought as to what they are
handling. I wish I had the strength to be the one who packed it all away, but I
couldn’t. It was hard enough to pack up my things. I moved my stuff out of the home
two weeks ago, but the majority of everything in that home was his.

He was my other half. My soul mate. One morning, we were completely in love and
talking about starting a family, and then by nightfall, I had found my boyfriend
barely alive in the storage room of the bar I owned. I rode with him as he was
rushed to the hospital in an ambulance, praying he would pull through even though
the look on the paramedics’ faces told me otherwise. After what seemed like forever
in the waiting room, doctors gave me the news he didn’t make it. The police
questioned me extensively, and later that night, I came home to his empty house.

From that day on, I have been on autopilot.

PROLOGUE

SADIE

Two years ago

I can’t breathe.

Her arms desperately thrashed as Melbourne’s vicious underbelly boss held her face
into the river. Sadie Harris felt it. The hand in her hair. The fingernails in her arm.
Pushing her. Drowning her. Forcing her to inhale water. Every time she saw the
black start to encroach her vision, he’d wrap her hair around his hand and yank her
to the surface.

On instinct she gasped for it.

The air seemed heavy.

The air felt synthetic as it surged into her lungs.

Her chokes, she felt against her throat.

Her coughs added to the burn.

Then it hit her.

The water rose up, leaving an agonising cut along the way as she threw it up.
The tears, Sadie couldn’t help. The water torture Vincent Salvatore had unleashed
on her was exactly that. Torture. Over and over again. More and more. He’d had her
wishing for death.

Death would be so easy.

She screamed words telling him to do it. To kill her. Make it all go away. Stop the
brutality. Words that seemed like the words to say. He’d already ran the knife
throughout the length of her body. Knicks and stabs he had made.

Then Salvatore bent down.

And Sadie felt the delicious sensation of the cold barrel of his gun run along the side
of her face.

Death was easy when it was in the hands of a mad man.

EXCERPT

For what feels like long minutes, I lose myself in the feeling of Finn.  I think about
nothing but the warmth of his body enrapturing mine paired with the sweetness of
his breath, the obvious mint he must’ve had on the way over here tonight mixed
with the beers I had with him earlier. I feel the electricity on his fingers as he
touches me, holds me, but that feeling comes crashing down as soon as I feel his
hand move up my body. His fingertips are only centimeters away from the scars on
my neck. The proximity scares me because I can’t remember how it feels to have
someone else physically touching them. I recoil, bringing my right shoulder to my
ear out of habit, squeezing my eyes closed when I realize what I just did.

Shit!

He was just kissing you Olivia!

“I’m sorry; did I hurt you? I’m sorry!” Finn exclaims holding his hands up in front of
him like I’m the kissing police. The concern in his eyes is agonizing.

“No.  No, you didn’t hurt me at all.” I shake my head. Crushing my eyes closed again, I
release the breath I didn’t know I was holding. “Damnit! I’m so sorry, I just…”

“Fuck.” I whisper.

Two hands are on my head softly smoothing my hair back on each side. “Olivia, it’s
okay. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you.” Finn’s hands are strong and comforting.

He makes me want to relinquish to his soft touch. Kissing him was definitely great,
until I screwed it all up.

“No, Finn you didn’t. It’s me. I just…” I take a deep breath and look down too timid to
look at him; and quite frankly, I’m just not ready to have this conversation. “It’s just
been a while….I guess.”

Maybe I’m really not ready for this.

Maybe I really don’t want it.

“I understand.” Finn tilts my head back to capture my attention. He studies me while
stroking my cheek with his thumb. “Olivia, I get that something horrible must’ve
happened to you in your past that you’re not ready to talk about, and that’s okay.
Hell, it’s okay if you never want to talk about it, but if and when you do, I’m here. I’ll
be here.”

How can he read me so well in just a short time?

He kisses my forehead, an affectionate show of compassion. “We all have parts of
our past that we wish never happened Liv, and even though sometimes I don’t want
to believe it, I have a respect for the saying ‘What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger’.”

EXCERPT

“Don’t speak about something you don’t understand, all right? Whatever Katie has
told you, that’s all it is...a piece of a much bigger pie. You don’t know me, and no
matter what you think, you don’t know her either.”

Chad crossed his arms in front of his chest, not sure what to say next. From the
corner of his eye, he could see Katie stomping through the tall grass towards them.

The dust from Jay’s car had finally billowed into the garden where she’d been
working.

“Are you warning me about her...Jay?” Chad locked eyes with him, his gaze never
wavering even though Katie was getting closer with each step.

Jay slammed the car door, wearing a muted grin as he matched Chad’s pose, crossing
his own arms and pulling himself up to his full height, at least three inches taller
than Chad’s five feet and eleven inches. “She used to be different, that’s all. Calm
yourself, will you? I’m just telling you, you don’t know the real Katie. To be honest,
you probably never will. The real Katie we all knew and loved died along with her
father. My Katie is gone, so like I said, don’t talk about things you only think you
understand.”

Thankfully, Chad didn’t have to form a response, not that he knew what he would
say to that, anyway. Katie’s feet hit the gravel just as Chad had opened his mouth to
speak; however, the look on her face evoked enough uncertainty in him that he
swiftly closed it again.

“You said you were picking Mason up at five thirty. It’s only a few minutes past five.”

Katie consulted her watch as though to confirm it, lifting her head to glare at Jay
again.

“I’m a few minutes early. I wanted to see how everything was going.”

“Everything is just fine, Jay. You can come back in twenty seven minutes.” Katie
didn’t look at Chad as she brushed past the two men and headed for the house,
where Chad knew Mason was currently packing up his clothes and Nintendo DS to
take with him.

“Katie, wait...” Jay’s pleas went unanswered, the screen door banging closed abruptly
behind her. Only a defeated sigh sounded in the thick silence between them, and
Chad uneasily turned away from the other man, intent on cleaning up his mess near
the barn wall and getting the hell out of dodge before this situation got any more
heated. Jay, on the other hand, didn’t have the same intentions.

“See? What’d I tell you? She’s impossible.”

“No. She’s hurt. There’s a difference.” Chad didn’t look at him. Instead, he plucked
the hammer and tin can full of nails from the ground and pretended to admire his
handiwork on the barn wall.

“You seem to know a lot about my girlfriend and her—“

“Ex.”

“What?”

“She’s your ex-girlfriend.”

Jay stared at him, seeming to mull over how to react. Chad couldn’t be sure whether
it was humiliation or anger that clouded the man’s clean shaven face, maybe a bit of
both. Either way, Chad didn’t fear him, and he stared back, unblinking.

“Good to meet you, Chad.” Jay’s tone was condescending and gruff.

“See you in twenty four minutes,” Chad replied, and the hint of a smirk crossed his
face the moment he broke eye contact and turned away.

EXCERPT

When a picture of the pond pops up on the screen, my breath hitches in my chest. With the moon
beaming down and reflecting off the glass-like water, it’s more than beautiful. It’s tranquil, peaceful, but most of all, it reminds me of her. I can almost see us there, our feet hanging off the side, our shoulders grazing every once in a while. She looked so gorgeous in the moonlight. I wish I had a picture of that, but this is a close second.

“That looks like something straight out of a magazine,” I whisper before I realize what I’m saying.

“Hopefully, it will be.” She laughs.

“How much for a print of that?” I ask.

“Really? You’d want—”

“Yes,” I cut her off, “I’d love to have one of your pictures.”

“Well, it’s yours. I’ll order the prints once I’m back in New York and have them sent directly to you.”

“Let me pay.”

“No, it’s my pleasure. Really.”

“Give me your phone,” I instruct, and she willingly hands it over. I put my phone number in as a new contact and shoot myself a text before handing it back. “I have your number now, so I’ll text you my
address.”

“Okay,” she says, smiling.

“Okay.” For the hundredth time today, I find myself staring at her lips for longer than necessary, wanting to bend down and kiss the shit out of her. She swallows hard and I abruptly break my gaze. Turning around, I leave in search of something to do before I get myself in trouble.

About The Author

First things first, we're the realest.

Oh, wait. Iggy already used that one.

Well, let's see...

What some people don't know is there are two of us and we're both Jennifers. How lucky are we? The most common name from the 70's! Our parents were so original.

We found each other through Twilight and tornadoes. Sounds like a crazy combination, but it's true. We were roaming around in the same groups of people on social media, but we hadn't really became
friends. But that all changed on a stormy Oklahoma night when we noticed that we were both
experiencing the same tornado warnings.

We met a week later for lunch and the rest is history. We already knew we had the whole Twilight thing in common, but what we learned that day is that we both loved music and traveling. Together, we've been everywhere. Well, not everywhere, but a lot of places...Seattle, Forks, LA, New York, Chicago, Philly, Nashville, and New Orleans, where our hearts reside.

About six months after we met, we also realized we both had a passion for writing. When we started
outlining our first story, we thought that would be it. One story and done. So, we dumped everything we loved into those 100,000 words. If you're familiar with the term "crack fic", that was kind of what it was for us. We had fun with it and let ourselves live on those pages.

But it was like Lays potato chips.

We couldn't write just one.

So, twenty stories later, here we are--publishing our first novel. And how crazy is it that we went back to the beginning.

Finding Focus was originally a Twilight Fan Fic titled Southern Comfort.

Cover Reveal : Chasing Spring

I thought I’d left Blackwater, Texas behind for good. I didn’t belong in the small town, but my dad
wouldn’t listen. He dragged me back home in his beat-up truck and dropped a bomb along the way:
Chase Matthews was moving in with us. He was the golden boy of my high school, my former best
friend, and the last person I wanted sleeping across the hall. His presence was too great a reminder of
the ghosts I was trying to forget.

I didn’t ask for a hero. I don’t want to be saved.

To me, Lilah Calloway meant late nights sneakin’ out, moonlit hair, and sparklers in July. She was my best friend until the day she left and I’d assumed Blackwater had seen the last of her. Then, like a
tempest, she rolled back into town for the final half of senior year. The chopped hair and dark devil-
may-care attitude warned most people away, but I knew if I fought hard enough, I could find the lost
girl.

I didn’t want to be her hero. Some girls don’t need to be saved.

About The Author

I am a lover of books, chocolate, reality TV, black labs, and cold weather. Seriously, if I had it my way, I would be curled up on the couch with all of those things... everyday.

I live in Texas where I spend my free time writing and reading. My favorite authors include Mindy Kaling & Jonathan Safran Foer. I'm a comedy geek and love all things "funny". Women like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Mindy Kaling are definitely the biggest inspirations for my writing, though I think my work tends to skew a bit smuttier than theirs.

She have her way with making characters that are very relatable and easy to fall in love with. I can't wait for this new book, I mean look at that cover ! It's beautiful and simple :)

EXCERPT

She broke their kiss and tried to pull back to look into his amazing eyes, but he
pulled her head into his chest and kissed her hair. He held her so tightly, she could
barely breathe.

“Do you still trust me?” he whispered, his lips never leaving her head, his hold not
allowing her to move. He felt the slightest nod of her head and his arms fell to his
side, freeing her from his grasp.

Abby’s body shot straight up, a look of anger on her face. She obviously hadn’t liked
not being able to move, but it had been his only option. Slowly, he saw the change in
her features as her brain began to register she was no longer safely in her bed. Her
eyes darted around Roth’s bedroom, from the ancient wall sconces burning on the
stone walls to the heavy drapes hanging on his ten foot windows.

“Where…how…where?” she asked, her eyes moving back to his.

He rested his hands on her hips, feeling her entire body tremble. What had he done?

“We’re in my bedroom.”

She scurried away from him and off the bed. Standing on shaky legs, she stumbled
away from Roth, her brain trying to process what had just happened. One minute,
she was in her room, and the next, she wasn’t sure.

A knock at the door distracted her from her obvious hallucination.

“Go away!” Roth’s deep and powerful voice yelled a moment too late. Sheer panic
overtook her as a large boar-like creature stepped into the room. Her scream of
terror probably resonated throughout all of the Underworld as her shaky legs
collapsed beneath her. Roth’s movement from the bed couldn’t have been seen with
the human eye, and his muscular arms caught her before she could even hit the
ground.

“I said go away and don’t disturb me again or I’ll have your head on a spike!” He
cradled her delicate body in his arms and carried her to a black leather chaise near
the window. Kneeling beside her, he lovingly brushed her blonde hair away from
her face and softly kissed her temple. “N’anya, Abby, wake up.”

After a few moments, her eyes fluttered, and for a moment, a sweet smile came
across her face. Then, the look he dreaded—fear and hatred shadowed her beautiful
blue eyes. “What are you?”

He kept his voice just above a whisper as he spoke. “I’m Astaroth, one of the seven
princes of the Underworld, commander of forty legions, and the man who’s in love
with you.”

She’s an only child so has her mother to thank for her over active imagination and
knack for storytelling. Over the years she's written several short stories of the
"naughty" nature. But had never envisioned herself as a writer. Just someone who
enjoyed telling a steamy story from time to time.

As I approach the house, I can see that Gran is already in the garden. Knowing this
isn’t going to go well with her, I suck it up and just deal with this shit literally.

“Lord have mercy, child. What happened to ya?” Gran says, looking toward me.

“Your boy down there had me take the cow shit to the compost pile and you can see
the shit won,” I say with my arms crossed.

“Bless your heart. Did you not use the tractor?”

“Tractor?” At that exact moment, I hear an engine and I’ll be damned. Barrick is
using a bucket to haul the rest of the manure down there. He looks toward us and
waves. It’s on like donkey kong.

About The Author

Casey Peeler grew up in North Carolina and still lives there with her husband
daughter.

Growing up Casey wasn't an avid reader or writer, but after reading Their Eyes
Were Watching God by Zora Neal Hurston during her senior year of high school, and
multiple Nicholas Sparks' novels, she found a hidden love and appreciation for
reading.  That love ignited the passion for writing several years later, and her
writing style combines real life scenarios with morals and values teenagers need in
their daily lives.

When Casey isn't writing, you can find her near a body of water listening to country
music with a cold beverage and a great book.

Cover Reveal : Restoration & Forgiveness

When I ran back home, I wasn’t prepared for the reminders of him everywhere I
turned. I certainly never expected Keegan to follow. I thought I made myself clear -
we were through. I didn’t want anything to do with him. But, he inserted himself
back into my life, and there was nothing I could do.

I pushed he pulled.

I ran and he chased me.

I cried and he wiped away the tears.

He just wouldn’t give up, and the battle my head and my heart are waging, is one I
don’t want to be a part of. You see my head says be strong, but my heart is saying I
belong to him, and always will.

What does one do when her heart can easily forgive, yet her head refuses to.

Can Keegan, and I restore our fairy tale, or will our story be closed for good?

EXCERPT

“Let’s dance,” I tell Delaney.  I’m feeling pretty good and the music is loud. It's a
perfect cover to get away from him.

I grab Delaney's hand and drag her to the dance floor.  I don’t look back, letting the
music and alcohol course through my body as I move my hips with the beat.

After a while, I head to the bathroom, needing a break from the sweaty dance floor.
Delaney heads back to the bar to get us more drinks, which I’m sure I don’t need
since I already feel like I'm having a hard time walking a straight line.  Luckily all
goes well in the ladies room, and I’m able to use the facilities without help.  I giggle
at what an awesome drunk I am.

I walk out with a smile on my face when suddenly someone catches my arm and
turns me around, my back against a wall.  My heart speeds up and for a split second I
don’t recognize who has grabbed me until I hear the low timbre of his voice.

“Are you drunk?”

I look into Keegan’s eyes while he holds both of my arms - he's trapped me.

“Maybe a little.”

He looks angry, and for some reason my drunk self thinks the way he's looking at me
is hilarious.

“You need to be careful, anyone could take advantage of you right now, Aimee.”

“I’m not alone I’m with Delaney.” I remind him.

He tilts his head as his green eyes bore into me. “Who is also wasted.”

“Well if it weren't for you I wouldn’t need to be here,” I shoot back.

“If it weren't for me you would have fallen over, the way you were stumbling out of
the bathroom, I’m surprised you didn’t wipe out,” he growls.

“What are you, a stalker Keegan? I don’t remember you being this creepy before,
must have picked it up from your blonde banshee.”

He looks at me confused, but then I see his eyes turn from anger to regret.

I reach up to touch his cheek. “Your eyes are so blue, like the ocean. Did you know
you have the most beautiful eyes on the planet?” Did I say that out loud? Oh shit!

He looks at me and then his lips curve up into that panty-dropping smile, and I know
if he decided to take me here I wouldn’t protest.  My head gets all foggy when he is
this close.

He must see my walls fall at that moment, because his warm lips descend on me, and
I can’t help but pull him close as our lips meet. It’s an explosion of everything I’ve
been feeling in the last few days - anger, passion, hurt, and wanting.  We devour each
other.   My head is telling me to stop, but I can’t.  His power over me is too strong.
Everything else around us falls away. His warm hand slides under my shirt shooting
a tingle down my spine that feels amazing.  I press into him trying to get closer.
When we come up for air, he places his forehead against mine.

“To the stars,” he whispers.

I pull away and I look up to him. “The stars are too far away Keegan, no on will ever
reach them. Even if you could touch one they'd burn you to ash.”

He releases his hold on me and I’m free, I’m almost sober now and flee to the front
of the bar and out the door. The farther away I get from Keegan, the better.  I’m this
close to forgiving him, but having been drinking, I don’t trust myself.  I can't be held
responsible for my actions right now. At least that’s what I tell myself once I step
outside and look up at the sky. Up to the twinkling stars, wishing just once I could
touch them.
